QUICK TIPS FOR THE
CURIOUS EDUCATOR

Quick Tips offer “down and dirty” solutions for your classroom TODAY!  These are easy to follow ideas that we have found successful in our classrooms. Here are two topics for your use.

Facilitate deeper student learning
You can increase your facilitation of learning by using the following techniques on a regular basis.

  1. Attend to and respond to student feeling. Your sensory acuity in class is a key to being in touch with students.
  2. Listen for and employ students’ ideas in instructional interactions.
  3. Dialogue with our students on important content. Dialogue is when there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer but rather questions and thoughts that create deeper meaning for the learner, (and Instructor too!)
  4. Praise early and often. Make sure it is genuine and specific. (i.e. “That‘s a great question, it tells me you are really trying to understand the content at a deeper level!)
  5. Tailor content to the real world of students, immediate and in the future.
  6. Be spontaneous, expressive and use humor. You love your subject so make sure students know that and also that you can have fun.

Build rapport with your students
We’ve discovered at least five ways that increase rapport with students.

  1. Attend to every conversation with your full attention make eye contact if culturally appropriate.
  2. Respond with purpose to the specific question or comment. Sometimes we plan a response before the comment or question is completed. Listening is a key.
  3. Gather information by asking questions to better understand what is being asked and to show your interest in their questions and comments.
  4. Offer your thoughts and enrich the conversation by adding enough detail to show your understanding of the question.
  5. Match the student’s pace, energy, and style. These non-verbals are critical to building better rapport.
